Study on the Neuropsychiatric Outpatients with the Complaint of Headache

Abstract
|
|
|
The authors have studied 195 outpatients visited neurosychiatric department, National
a Medical Center with the chief complaint of headache from April. 1 , 1980 to Aug. 31, 1980.
Those who had organic basis for their headache were 31 cases and remaining 164 cases
had functional or psychogenic basis.
The results were as follows:
1. In the diagnostic proportion, cerebrovascular disease (58.0%) , convulsive disorder
(22.6%) were leading ones among the organic cases, and neurotic disorder (53.7%), w

tension headache (25.0%) were majority among the functional cases.
2. Sex difference showed female to male ratio as 2 : 1 among the functional cases.
3. Between age 30 and 39, 30.3% of the total cases ranked first in the distribution.
4. The average duration of headache being suffered before visit to OPD was 57 days in the overall cases, 19 days in the organic cases, and 94 days in the functional cases.

7. EEG abnormality showed 25.8% in the organic ones and 4.5% in the functional cases.
8. The commonly associated symptoms with headache were anorexia, dizziness, alteration a of consciousness, vomiting, heat sensation et al, in the organic cases, Whereas insomnia anorexia, dizziness et al. were prominent in the functional cases.
9. The precipitating factors in the functional casewere merital conflicts, family troubles, academic failure and financial problems in the order.
10. The premorbid persenality in the functional cases were variable as depressive, histrionic paranoid and obsessive one.
11. The period of treatment was 91 days in the overall cases, 86 days in the organic cases, 93 days in the functional cases.
